Instructions

    • 1

Visit your veterinarian. Since you have several cats experiencing diarrhea, veterinary treatment is necessary to determine the exact cause and best course of treatment for the condition. Your veterinarian will perform a physical examination and take a medical history for each cat. The vet can run diagnostic tests, including fecal analysis, blood tests or x-rays.

    • 2

Treat underlying conditions. Depending on the cause of the diarrhea, your vet may need to treat your cats for food allergies, parasites, infection or bowel obstruction to fully eliminate the diarrhea.

    • 3

Administer prescription medication as directed. Courses of medication may be short-term or may need to be administered throughout your cats' lives. Medications may control pain, prevent worsening of diarrhea or kill bacteria, fungus or parasites.

    • 4

Place your cats on a fast. This involves taking your cats completely off food for 24 hours, and allowing controlled amounts of water and ice cubes to lick during this period. A fast allows your cat's digestive system to rest and heal before beginning to digest food again.

    • 5

Feed your cats a bland diet. After fasting for 24 hours, begin feeding your cats a bland diet of boiled chicken and boiled white rice. These foods are easy for cats to digest. Offer plenty of fresh water to drink. After 24 hours on a bland diet, begin feeding half bland food along with half of your cats' regular food for another 24 hours before returning to the regular diet.

Clean up the litter box. Your cats' litter boxes need extra attention during bouts of diarrhea to keep down the odor and prevent the spread of infection or parasites among your cats. Empty used litter boxes and discard the litter. Wash the boxes with soap, water and a scrub brush. Refill the boxes with fresh litter and maintain the boxes by scooping out waste several times daily and washing weekly.
