How to Stop a Cat From Throwing Up Food

When cats vomit once in a while, this is considered normal behavior. However, if your cat vomits often, it may be the sign of a serious problem. When a cat throws up frequently, it may be caused by hairballs, digestive disorders, overfeeding, a bacterial infection, poisoning or even cancer. So the first thing you should do when your cat is vomiting frequently is take the cat to a vet to get checked out. The vet will be able to tell you if it's something serious. If your vet tells you the cat is OK, then there are several things you can do to stop your cat from throwing up food.

Instructions

  1. Try Different Types of Foods

    • 1

Pay special attention to the labels on the cat food, and test four to five different brands. Your cat may have an allergy or negative reaction to a certain ingredient or additive in the food.

    • 2

Keep track of how often your cat throws up each food.

    • 3

Try an organic or natural food, which your cat may respond better to because of the lack of artificial ingredients and fillers.

    • 4

Try a gluten-free cat food and see if your cat responds better to that type of food. Some cats have negative reactions to wheat-based products.

    Ration the Food

    • 5

Since many cats have a tendency to eat too much at one time, try portioning your cat's food.

    • 6

Start by measuring out the amount of food your cat should each eat day.

    • 7

Feed your cat the food in small increments every two to three hours.

    • 8

Or, you can set a timer and pull the food bowl away after a couple minutes. Set the bowl back down an hour later so your cat has time to digest its food.

    • 9

Consider buying an automatic food dispenser as well, which will allow you to set a timer that releases a certain amount of food at certain times.
