How to Stop Cat From Defecating Outside Litterbox

While they have a reputation for being low-maintenance and rather aloof, cats are actually quite sensitive. For example, their sense of smell is 20 times stronger than that of humans. When a cat's behavior changes, it is a strong warning sign for its owners. If a cat is defecating outside of its litter box the owner should take immediate steps to fix the situation.

Clean the litter box on a regular basis. A litter box should be cleaned at least twice a day. A cat may defecate outside of the correct area to signal that the box is dirty. Homes with three or more cats should have two litter boxes and they should be placed in quiet and relatively private spaces. The area around the litter boxes must be clean. Once a location is picked, do not move the litter box. Make sure that your cat fits comfortably in the litter box.

Reflect on your cat's living situation. It may be defecating outside of the litter box due to anxiety. This could be as a result of the introduction of a new cat or other animal. Cats are creatures of habit; any major change in their daily rhythms can cause a tremendous amount of anxiety. On the other hand, if a cat is left alone for the majority if the day, that can result in high stress levels as well.
