Feline blood pressure is measured by inserting a catheter into the cat's arteries (directly taking the blood pressure) or by placing a sensor and cuff onto the cat's foot and reading the measurement (indirectly taking the blood pressure).
High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure, or hypertension, damages a cat's brain, heart, kidneys, eyes and blood vessels. It is caused by kidney disease, endocrine system disease, tumors, nervous system disorders and certain medications. This condition is treatable with prescribed medication.
Low Blood Pressure

This is often a sign of shock. This condition may also be the result of brain disorders or trauma, cardiac arrest, and drug or allergic reactions. Chronically low blood pressure is treatable by veterinarians.

Common medications used for feline blood pressure problems include amlodipine and benazepril.

Additional treatments for feline blood pressure problems include low salt diets, fluid therapy, blood transfusions (for low blood pressure) and oxygen therapy.
