Veterinarian
-
When the cat exhibits symptoms like straining, howling when attempting to urinate, blood in urine, excessive licking of genital area, or urinating in places other than a litterbox, go to the vet as soon as possible. Veterinarians will begin with a urinalysis to determine if an infection is present, evaluate pH levels, look for any underlying kidney problems, and begin appropriate treatment.
Causes of Bladder Problems
-
A dirty litter box may introduce bacteria and cause infections. As cats age, diabetes, kidney problems and other complications can increase the risk. Diet is a primary cause of urinary problems.
A Cat’s Diet
-
Dry cat foods are made with fillers like ash, they contain grains which produce more carbohydrates than cats require, and they are inefficient protein sources. As a result, cats typically are much healthier on a diet of canned cat food, or home-prepared foods. Cats require adequate supplies of fresh water daily. Many are finicky drinkers and do not like chlorinated tap water, making filtered water a better choice.
Cranberries
-
In humans, cranberries have been used as a natural remedy for the prevention and treatment of bladder infections. According to the Natural Home Remedies website, cranberries prevent bacteria from lining bladder walls. They contain quinic and oxalic acids that prevent the formation of stones in the bladder and kidneys. However, according to the Stanford Cat Network, cats do not appropriately digest fruits as they are avid carnivores. They do not recommend cranberries for cats.
Supplements
-
There are a variety of other supplements suggested for the treatment or prevention of urinary conditions in cats. According to Stanford Cat Network, supplements containing glucosamine and proteoglycans may help with urinary problems. Other recommended supplements include marshmallow root or corn silk powders.

Cat Urinary Infections & Cranberries
Urinary complications are quite common among cats. Problems like cystitis, which is inflammation of the bladder, as well as bladder crystals or stones, or even infections, are all symptoms of urinary issues. The chance of urinary infections increases with age, especially regarding male cats and possible blockages. Such conditions require immediate veterinary attention. Diet is considered to be the main cause of urinary problems. Cranberries may support the health of the urinary system.
