Types

There are two types of Advantage Flea and Tick control for cats. One version of the product is specially formulated for cats under 9 pounds in weight, the other is for cats 9 pounds and over.
Effectiveness

Advantage Flea and Tick control claims to kill flea and tick larvae within 20 minutes of contract, and also promises to kill 98-100 percent of the fleas on a cat within 12 hours of application.
Application

Advantage comes in small tubes and is applied by squeezing the contents of the tube onto the skin behind a cat's neck, underneath its fur. The application is done once a month to ensure the cat is able to remain flea and tick free. Advantage is waterproof, so it can be used on animals that might be exposed to water.
The Active Ingredient

The active ingredient in Advantage Flea and Tick control for cats is imidacloprid, which is a pesticide safe for use on pets. Imidacloprid is also used in Advantage Flea and Tick control for dogs.
