Skin irritation and discomfort

Behavioral changes

Lethargy

In a field study performed by Bayer Healthcare on the effects of Advantage for cats, 2.7 percent of the cats within the study exhibited signs of lethargy after dosage. Signs of lethargy include excessive drowsiness and laziness and slow response to auditory or visual stimuli.
Hypersalivation

Hypersalivation may occur in cats that consume Advantage flea meds for cats orally, usually by licking or grooming after administration of the product. Hypersalivation, or ptyalism, is easily recognized as there is a significant increase in the amount of saliva the cat produces.
Polydipsia

Polydipsia is a pronounced increase in thirst. Polydipsia is usually the result of oral consumption of Advantage, typically caused by grooming after administration of the medicine when the product is still wet on the fur.
Coughing and gagging

A small percentage of cats receiving Advantage flea medicine will experience coughing and gagging after administration, especially if the product is consumed during grooming.
