Washing the Eyes
-
Washing the kitten's eyes to rid them of infection and pus is one way to treat the infection. This helps clear away any accumulated infection while eliminating some of the bacteria in and around the eye. The eyes can be moistened with a warm, damp cloth and then washed with a solution prescribed by your veterinarian.
Warm Compress
-
Applying a warm compress to the kitten's eyes helps relieve pain associated with the infection as well as to draw out any infection remaining in the eye. The compresses consist of clean cloths or gauze pads soaked in warm (not hot) water, then pressed gently against the eye for about five minutes. Your veterinarian may advise you to do this several times daily to assist in treating the kitten's eye infection.
Antibiotics
-
A course of antibiotics kills any infection-causing bacteria. Oral antibiotics may or may not be prescribed for your kitten, depending on the kitten's age and the severity of the infection. Topical antibiotic ointments are almost always used, applied directly to the kitten's eye, to eliminate symptoms of the infection as well as the infection itself.
