Persian Cat Diseases

Persians are a popular breed of cat known for their long coats and easy-going dispositions. Like any breed, however, Persians are susceptible to certain feline diseases. These diseases vary in severity and types of treatment and it is wise to visit a veterinarian regarding any medical problems your Persian cat experiences.
  1. Polycystic Kidney Disease

    • Polycystic kidney disease is a genetic disease that commonly occurs in Persian cats. This condition causes problems when the cat is older, though cysts in the kidneys are present even in younger cats. The cysts grow as the cat ages, causing enlarged and dysfunctional kidneys. This condition is fatal, as eventually the cat's kidneys fail. Symptoms of polycystic kidney disease include weight loss and lack of appetite, excessive thirst and urination, and depression. Veterinary treatment is required to maintain your cat's health if the cat has polycystic kidney disease.

    Progressive Retinal Atrophy/Degeneration

    • This condition, also known as PRA or PRD, is one of several diseases that can lead to feline blindness. A cat's eye contains photoreceptors that help the cat to see in the darkness and to see color. In cats with PRA or PRD, the photoreceptors degenerate over time, causing the cat to lose visual acuity until vision is completely lost at 3-5 years of age. This disease is inherited in some Persian cats. Symptoms include night blindness (inability to see in the dark), dilated pupils, cloudy eyes, depression and fearfulness or reluctance to explore his surroundings.

    Seborrhea Oleaosa

    • Seborrhea oleaosa is a skin condition that produces scaly, excessively oily skin. This problem can be inherited and may occur at an early age in Persian cats. Your cat may need to take medications such as oral and topical steroids and antibiotics to treat any secondary skin infections caused by this condition. Keeping the coat trimmed back and bathing your cat in special shampoos help treat scales on the skin. Symptoms include scaly, oily skin, itching, or bumps and lesions on the skin.
