Explanation
-
A drug that contains aluminum hydroxide works as an antacid on a person or on a cat. A brand of this medication is called Alternagel. It is available in liquid and gel formats, and it is available over the counter.
Uses
-
Veterinarians recommend Alternagel for cats for indigestion as well as for gastric reflex disorder or stomach ulcers. In cats with kidney disease, Alternagel can treat high phosphate levels. The antacid properties function as a phosphorus binder.
Cat Dosages
-
The human dosages of Alternagel are much too large for cats. You must give cat dosages according to the guidelines of the veterinarian. As a general rule, you will give very small amounts of Alternagel to a cat before or directly following a meal. If you forget a dosage at a cat's mealtime, skip the dosage entirely. It is not wise to ever double the medication.
Warning
-
Cats can be, or can become, allergic to any medication. The extreme symptoms of an allergic reaction to Altermagel are difficulty breathing or swelling of the lips, tongue, or face. If these symptoms show up, take the cat immediately to a pet hospital or emergency clinic.
Advice
-
If your cat is taking other medications for other conditions, including other over-the-counter and natural remedies, tell your veterinarian. Other medications may interfere with Alternagel, or vice versa.

Alternagel Cat Medication
Cats and humans can take some of the same medications for the same reasons. If you or your cat have conditions that cause indigestion, for instance, you can both take Alternagel. Your cat may have other conditions that warrant the use of an over-the-counter antacid. It pays to explore the possibilities.
