Bedding
-
The first day after your cat has been neutered it may not be able to reach the litter box. If this is the case, make sure to change the bedding in the cat's bed often. If your pet is unable to reach the litter box after two days, contact your vet for further instructions.
Pain Killers
-
Many vets will prescribe pain killers for your neutered cat. Make sure to follow all directions when giving the pain killers to your cat. Set a timer to remind you when to offer a new dose.
Wet Food
-
The first day after surgery your cat will have a smaller appetite and it will also have a harder time digesting food. If you are concerned about this, you can offer your cat wet food rather than dry food. Wet food is easier for cats to digest.
Limit Physical Activity
-
Do not allow your pet outside for 14 days after surgery. This gives the wound time to heal properly before exposing it to contaminants present in an outdoor environment. Try to limit the cat's activities for at least three days after the surgery to keep the stitches in place.
Ointments
-
If you vet gave you a cleansing ointment for your neutered cat, apply the ointments daily as directed. Do not allow your cat to lick the ointment or the incision site. The ointment should not be ingested and bacteria in the cat's mouth can cause infection at the wound site. If necessary, you may request a cone to place over your cat's head to prevent licking.
Monitor
-
Monitor your cat daily to make sure he is progressing properly. Note any swelling present after two days, as well as redness, unusual discharges or strange behavior on the part of your cat. Report any problems to your vet.
Cleaning
-
The cat should not be washed for 14 days after the surgery. If the wound site gets dirty, it can be cleaned with a solution of salt dissolved into warm water. Gently wipe the area clean with a soft cloth. Make sure to dry the area as much as possible. Pay special attention to the area for the next few days because it is likely that the wound will become infected.

Tips After Neutering a Cat
Neutering is a process that many male cats go through. Small incisions are made along the scrotum and the testicles are removed from the cat's body. The incisions are then sewed back up. After this surgery, it is important to give your cat plenty of recovery time and care to help him return to top health.
