Since ear mites are highly contagious to other cats and dogs, it is difficult to keep your cat ear mite free. Treating your cat's ear mites must include prevention to keep the cat from being reinfected. Cats commonly get ear mites from other animals in shelters or outdoors.
Things You'll Need
- Cat ear cleaning solution
- Gauze
- Ear mite treatment
- Antibiotics
Instructions
Clean the cat's ears daily. Make sure you do not clean anywhere you cannot see in the ear. Gently clean off debris with cat ear cleaning solution and gauze. Then use the cleaning solution to partially fill the cat's ear. Let the ear drain naturally and soak up any excess solution on the outside with gauze.
Buy and use ear mite treatment from your pet store or veterinarian. This could be either ear drops or a skin application such as Revolution.
Use an antibiotic from your veterinarian for any secondary infections that your cat has with ear mites.
Treat all pets in your household at the same time to prevent a cycle of ear mites going through your household. This includes your dogs as well as cats.
Avoid letting your pet(s) leave home. Whether or not all of your pets are infected, they all must be kept from the source of the ear mites.
