Gastrointestinal Effects
-
Metronidazole is generally well tolerated by most cats, but there may be some gastrointestinal side effects associated with its use. These may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and loss of appetite. These side effects may improve with the use of the medication. Veterinarians often prescribe Metronidazole as an anti-diarrhea medication, as it may stop diarrhea in some cats, according to Vetinfo.com.
Toxicity
-
Toxicity may occur with the use of Metronidazole in cats, when used in very high doses or with prolonged use. If your cat is taking Metronidazole, watch for symptoms such as staggering, confusion, head tilt, tremors, involuntary eye movement, seizures and rigidity. Cats that experience these symptoms of toxicity must not be given the medication and it may take up to two weeks for symptoms to resolve.
Allergic Reaction/Interaction
-
Metronidazole may cause an allergic reaction in cats that have a hypersensitivity to it. This is a life-threatening condition that may require emergency medical attention. The symptoms of an allergic reaction from the use of Metronidazole may include wheezing, swelling of the face, swelling of the lips, hives and difficulty breathing. Metronidazole may also cause a dangerous interaction with certain medications. These medications include cimetidine and phenobarbital. Be sure to tell your veterinarian about any other medications your cat is taking before giving your cat Metronidazole.
