Holistic Approach for Feline Kidney Failure

Kidney failure is a very common disease that affects mostly older cats, and refers not to an inability to produce urine but an inability to filter the body's wastes. There is no treatment that can reverse the effects of kidney failure, since the kidney tissue is gradually dying and being replaced with scar tissue, but a multi-pronged, holistic approach for feline kidney failure that involves both traditional and natural remedies is the best way to manage the disease. Always discuss any supplement or herb with your vet before use to be sure it will not interact negatively with any medication.
  1. Medications

    • The impaired kidney's failure to filter the body's waste leaves the cat prone to secondary infection, often in the mouth. The vet will prescribe antibiotics to treat any infection that may be present so strain will be taken off of whatever functioning kidney tissue is left. The cat may receive injections to help with anemia and subcutaneous fluid to keep her hydrated and help flush out the kidneys. Kidney failure can also cause gastrointestinal bleeding and ulcers, which can be alleviated with antacids.

    Diet

    • A low-phosphorus diet may be prescribed that is based on a high-quality protein. Canned food should be introduced to the diet, as the moisture will assist with hydration and may help entice the cat to eat. If the cat absolutely will not eat the prescribed food, do not attempt to starve him into it. Hills Prescription Diet a/d is a high-calorie, highly palatable canned food that most cats will eat, or your vet may recommend pureed baby food.

    Supplements

    • Potassium supplements may be helpful if the cat's potassium levels are below normal, and a multi-vitamin supplement will help combat malnutrition and keep the body functioning. Antioxidants like CoQ10 can sometimes help the body eliminate toxins; L-taurine powder will contribute a necessary vitamin that may be somewhat lacking in a prescription diet. Probiotics and canned pumpkin will add fiber and encourage the growth of beneficial bacteria that can help keep the digestive tract functioning, and Omega-3 oils have been shown to slow the progression of kidney disease.

    Herbs

    • Renagen is a Chinese herbal formula that is said to strengthen kidney function, and Renal Essentials can balance urine pH and strengthen immunity. There are many herbal preparations that are formulated to reduce irritation and protect the urinary tract and stimulate the kidneys, but it is wise to consult a holistic veterinarian to find out which ones are safest and most effective.

    Care

    • Keep the cat's stress levels low. Acupuncture has been shown to stimulate the kidneys and reduce stress and anxiety, and many cats actually enjoy the experience. Herbal flower remedies and aromatherapy can also help keep the cat calm. Be sure to spend plenty of quality time with your cat, because a happier cat is a healthier cat.
