Things You'll Need
- Flea comb
- Cup
- Water
- Dish soap
- Paper towels
- Bathtub or sink
- 5 drops citrus extract
- Towel
- Topical flea treatment
Instructions
Run a flea comb through the fur of your large cat. Hold the cat with one hand and use the other hand to comb the fur. Work in small sections so you do not miss any portion of the cat's fur. Dip the comb in a cup of hot, soapy water and wipe off with a paper towel after each pass. Make sure to get behind the cat's ears, under the neck and along the face.
Fill the bathtub or sink partially with lukewarm water. Pour 3 tablespoons dish soap and five drops of citrus extract into the water. Make sure there is enough water in the tub or sink to submerge about half of the cat's body.
Place your cat in the water. Many cats dislike water. It may be necessary to find a helper to assist you with bathing the cat.
Lather the cat with the soapy water. Use your fingers to work the soapy water into the fur. Scrub the cat's face carefully so the soapy water does not get into the eyes.
Keep your cat soaked with the soapy water for at least five minutes. This will ensure that the fleas die.
Drain the water and rinse off your cat. Use a detachable faucet nozzle or large cup to thoroughly rinse the soap from the cat. Dry the cat promptly with a towel.
Apply a topical flea treatment, such as Frontline, Advantage or Revolution, to the cat for protection against fleas and to kill any fleas that may still be living. Follow the directions on the package.
