How to Feed Milk to Cats for Constipation

Constipation is an intestinal problem that occurs when bowel movements become slow (sluggish) or non-existent. This problem occurs in humans, but it also occurs in cats. While constipation in humans is uncomfortable and unpleasant, in cats it can cause pain and an obstruction can be deadly. For mild cases of constipation or to make sure your cat stays regular, you can try simple home remedies, such as offering your cat a dish of milk. Cats are naturally lactose intolerant, so drinking milk produces a diarrhea effect in cats that works well to produce a quick bowel movement.

Instructions

    • 1

Consult your veterinarian to determine the severity of your cat's constipation. Severe cases of constipation require immediate medical treatment. However, if the condition is mild, using a home remedy, such as milk, is effective.

    • 2

Offer your cat a dish of milk twice daily. Fill the dish with 1/8 cup of milk in the morning and repeat this procedure at night. Continue this method until your cat's bowel movement becomes regular.

    • 3

Use a medicine dropper to administer milk to a cat that refuses to drink milk from a dish. Give 1 cc of milk every five minutes for an hour, this should produce a bowel movement within two hours. Repeat this procedure twice daily until your cat produces regular bowel movements.

    • 4

Mix 2 tablespoons of milk into your cat's moist food if the cat refuses to drink milk or will not take milk from a dropper. Do this twice daily, once in the morning and once in the evening until your cat produces regular bowel movements.
