Medications for Hair Loss in Cats

There are many medications that will treat cat hair loss, which can be due to skin disorders, allergies, an underlying condition or another disorder. These cat hair loss medications may be in the form of a topical agent, such as a cream or ointment, in a liquid, or in pill form. Some of these medications require a prescription from a licensed veterinarian, but there are some cat hair loss medications that can be purchased over-the-counter without a prescription.
  1. Animax

    • Animax, also known generically as nystatin, is a prescription medication and approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use in cats. Animax is a topical combination medication. It is used to treat skin disorders that will lead to cat hair loss. It contains an antifungal, antibiotic, corticosteroid and an antimicrobial. The veterinarian will prescribe this medication in a variety of ways. Treatment ranges from daily applications to weekly applications to applications of several times daily in the worst cases. The side effects of this medication are redness, swelling or skin irritation. If any of these occur, contact your veterinarian. This medication should be stored at room temperature.

    • Be Serene is a medication to treat anxiety in cats. It is an over-the-counter medication that does not require a prescription from the veterinarian. Be Serene contains herbal flower essence and has no side effects. It comes in an easy-to-use liquid dropper formula. It can be given either by placing a half-dropperful into your cat's water dish or by placing it directly into your cat's mouth. If the latter method is used, dispose of the medication after three weeks. Be Serene should be stored in a cool, dry area. It should not be stored near any strong odors, near a microwave or near an electromagnetic field of any type. It is available in 1-oz. bottles.
