Cosequin & Cystitis

Feline cystitis is a bladder inflammation that leads to frequent and painful urination. One medication that may help reduce inflammation and prevent recurrence of cystitis is Cosequin for Cats.
  1. Definition

    • Cystits causes pain for the cat.

The inner lining of the bladder consists, in part, of a substance called glycosaminoglycan (GAG). When a cat has cystitis, this inner GAG layer is damaged and results in inflammation of the bladder and pain for the cat.

    Origin

    • Cosequin was designed to promote joint health in cats.

Cosequin for Cats contains glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate. It was developed to help protect and improve cartilage in the cat's joints.

    Function

    • According to Nutramax Laboratories, the products in Cosequin for Cats are the same as some of the compounds in the GAG layer. The chondroitin in Cosequin may help heal the GAG layer and reduce inflammation in the bladder.

    Efficacy

    • Some cats with cystits seem to improve when given Cosequin for Cats.

According to the White Bear Animal Hospital in Minnesota, some cats with recurrent cystitis do seem to improve when supplemented with Cosequin and products like it. A study published by Ohio State University in August 2004 couldn't document the efficacy of Cosequin for Cats in treating cystitis.

    Considerations

    • Dietary changes may be a part of cystitis treatment.

Additional treatment options used with Cosequin for Cats include dietary changes, increasing water consumption and use of antibiotic therapy if there is a bacterial infection with the cystitis.
