Cipro for Feline Congestion

Bacterial infections are often an underlying contributor of feline congestion. Felines, particularly those in shelters and feral colonies, are susceptible to contagious feline upper respiratory diseases, conditions that frequently manifest in a bacterial sinus infection. Depending on the type of bacteria causing the infection and resulting congestion, the feline might be prescribed the powerful antibiotic Cipro.
  1. Function

    • Cipro, the brand name for ciprofloxacin, is a quinolone class antibiotic. Quinolone antibiotics are effective against bacterial infections, such as sinus-related infections, because they prevent the bacterial DNA from reproducing, ending the bacterial growth.

    Identification

    • Congestion affects the feline's sinus cavities, including the nose and eyes.

Nasal discharge that is thick and cloudy indicates the feline's congestion is caused by a bacterial infection. Although treating bacterial infections of the sinuses are tricky because the sinuses provide the organisms with optimal breeding ground, Cipro is shown to be an effective treatment and is one of the four commonly prescribed antibiotics for sinus-related bacterial infections as of 2010.

    Side Effects

    • Should the feline be prescribed Cipro to treat congestion related to a bacterial infection, owners should be aware of the side effects.Cipro is known to cause vomiting and decreased appetite. Cipro may also create issues within the cat's central nervous system; dizziness and epilepsy are signs of this serious side effect.

    Warning

    • Cipro should never be given to a congested cat allergic to quinolone antibiotics or sulfonamides. Cipro is also dangerous in pregnant or lactating females, and cats suffering from liver or kidney disease. Water is critical for the congested feline, not only to aid in healing the bacterial infection, but also to prevent crystals forming in the cat's urine, another serious complication from Cipro use.

    Recommendations

    • In addition to Cipro therapy for the congested cat, it is recommended to keep the feline warm, comfortable and separated from other animals in the home to prevent the spread of the infection. The feline's congestion should be relieved with the aid of a humidifier and veterinarian-prescribed decongestant in addition to antibiotic therapy.
