Natural Treatment for UTI in Cats

A urinary tract infection (UTI) in your cat can be a dangerous and even life-threatening condition. According to Natural Pet Care, while UTIs respond very well to antibiotics, the medication can actually kill off friendly bacteria as well. Natural treatment for UTI can be an option if it is caught in the early stages of infection.
  1. Symptoms

    • If your cat begins exhibiting any of the following symptoms, it may have a urinary tract infection and should be treated right away. Symptoms to watch for are strong smelling urine, straining or crying while urinating, blood in the urine, urinating in odd places or urinating in small amounts.

    Natural Treatment

    • An herbal tea made of equal parts goldenrod, parsley, horsetail, marshmallow root and elderberry will help fight the UTI immediately. Give your cat 1 tbsp. of the cooled tea three times a day while symptoms persist. Also give your cat one cranberry extract pill by mouth every day. The antibodies in cranberry extract prevent bacteria from attaching itself to the walls of the urinary tract.

    Additional Steps

    • Purchase a high-quality food made to specifically target and improve the health of your cat's urinary tract. Continue to feed your cat the food for a month after the UTI has passed to help prevent the infection from returning. Purchase a feline vitamin C supplement and add it to your cat's food daily. This will help your cat fight infection in the future.

    Veterinary Care

    • If your cat's symptoms are severe, take it to the veterinarian to be put on antibiotics. You can counter the loss of friendly bacteria caused by the antibiotics with a tablespoon of fresh yogurt given twice daily. Adding natural remedies to your cat's prescribed treatment can speed its recovery and help its body fight infection in the future.

    Warning

    • If your cat is experiencing debilitating pain or its bladder constantly feels full to the touch, you should take it to the veterinarian immediately. A UTI can be a serious, life-threatening issue.
