How to Treat a Cat Ear Infection

Bacteria, yeast, allergies and ear mites are the most common causes of ear infections in cats. If a cat is scratching at his ears and shaking his head, there's a good chance he has an infection. Ear infections can be painful and uncomfortable, but they're treatable. If left untreated, an ear infection can lead to severe and sometimes permanent damage.

Instructions

    • 1

Take the cat to a veterinarian for a proper diagnosis. If the vet detects multiple infections, he may recommend several medications, such as antibiotics, anti-fungal ointments and ear mite treatments.

    • 2

Mix a small amount of vinegar with an equal amount of water. Use a dropper to put a few drops of the solution into the ear, then massage the area. This will clean the ear and restore its proper chemical balance. Wipe out excess liquid with a cotton ball. Do not use a cotton swab, as this could damage the inner ear.

    • 3

Mix a solution of nine drops of yellow dock root extract and one tablespoon of water. Administer a few drops with a dropper and massage the ear. Repeat this treatment two or three times a day for the first few days, then once a day for six weeks.

    • 4

Administer two or three drops of olive oil directly into the ear with a dropper and gently massage to get the ear well coated. The oil will soothe the ear and relieve itching.

Use a flea medication every month. These medications kill off ear mites and destroy their eggs, preventing further infestation.
