Revolution Flea Treatment for Kittens

If your kitten is infested with parasites, your veterinarian might recommend trying Revolution. The product is developed and manufactured by Pfizer, the pharmaceutical company. It is a multipurpose topical solution that protects pets from both internal and external parasites. Selamectin, the active ingredient in Revolution, treats and prevents heartworm disease, flea infestations and ear mite infestations.
  1. Where to Obtain Revolution

    • Obtain a prescription from your veterinarian. Revolution is only available from a licensed veterinarian, at approximately $40 per package as of 2010. Make sure Revolution is safe to use for your kitten, depending on any other health conditions or risks it may have. For example, make sure it does not have any allergies to the chemicals in Revolution. Do not use it on sick or underweight animals.

    Application

    • Revolution must be used once a month throughout the year to be effective. Do not skip doses, and do not give doubles doses if you have missed one. It is packaged in single-dose applicator tubes for external use. Follow instructions on the package or use as recommended by your veterinarian.

    Benefits

    • According to the manufacturer, Revolution is designed for cats and kittens at least eight weeks old, including those breeding and nursing. Revolution protects pets against all three stages of the flea: adult, egg and larva stages. Revolution is also waterfast, which means pets can be bathed and get wet within two hours of application, without losing its effectiveness.

    Warning

    • Long-term use of Revolution might cause fleas to build resistance to the medicine. Chemicals might be too harsh on some kittens.

    Alternative to Revolution

    • Revolution might cause adverse reactions including diarrhea and vomiting, temporary hair loss, lethargy, salivation and muscle tremors. Immediately stop using Revolution and contact your veterinarian if your kitten experiences adverse reactions. A safer method of kitten flea treatment might be a bath. Wash your kitten with baby shampoo or mild dish soap in warm water. Eliminate any fleas you see with tweezers and dumping them in hot water. Dry your kitten with a towel. Comb out its fur with a flea comb. Sprinkle Borax powder on carpeting areas and vacuum in half an hour. Apply this treatment twice a week for two weeks.
