How to Administer Capstar to Cats

Capstar is the brand name for the drug Nitenpyram. It is given to dogs and cats over four weeks of age and works to eliminate fleas by killing the adult fleas but does not provide long-term relief. Re-infestation will occur if the cat is exposed to fleas again and another dose of Capstar will need to be given. Cats can be given Capstar on a daily basis if it is needed that often.

Instructions

  1. Giving Capstar in Food

    • 1

Place a small amount of food in your cat's dish at his regular feeding time.

    • 2

Mix a Capstar tablet into the food and mix it up to completely hide the pill.

    • 3

Watch the cat carefully to ensure that she eats the tablet rather than spitting it out.

    Giving Capstar Orally

    • 4

Have a helper hold the cat firmly.

    • 5

Hold the cat's head firmly and tilt it back. The cat will most likely drop his lower jaw. If not, use your middle finger to pry open the lower jaw.

    • 6

Continue to hold the lower jaw down with your middle finger and use your thumb and finger to push the pill as far back on the tongue as possible.

    • 7

Close the cat's mouth and stroke his neck firmly to encourage swallowing.

    • 8

Check the cat's mouth to ensure the pill was swallowed before you release him.
