Instructions
Bathe your cat in an anti-parasitic lime sulfur dip. Veterinarians will sometimes prescribe weekly lime sulfur dips for cats that are not heavily infested as a method of at home treatment. Follow the instructions provided on how to mix the solution and be sure to wear protective gloves when treating your pet. You must treat your pet weekly for the full life cycle of the mites (three weeks). If possible, perform the lime sulfur dip treatment outdoors and allow your cat to dry completely before entering the home. If you must bathe your pet indoors, be sure to do it in a well-ventilated area.
Ask your veterinarian about administering Ivermectin medication treatments to your pet. Cats with more advanced cases of sarcoptic mange often require the prescription medication Ivermectin as a means of treatment. Though mites have a life cycle of only three weeks, larvae can live and hatch beneath the skin once the adult mites have passed on. As a preventative measure, have your cat treated with Ivermectin by a veterinarian every two weeks for six weeks.
Treat your cat with Revolution parasite treatment for cats. Revolution is a topical over-the-counter parasite treatment that contains active ingredient selamectin. When administered once monthly, Revolution is known to be efficient in controlling fleas, heartworms, ear mites, hookworm and roundworm in both cats and dogs, and it is often used as an effective treatment for sarcoptic mange.
Administer antibiotic treatments to your cat. When secondary bacterial infections occur due to the cat scratching her open sores, veterinarians will prescribe antibiotic treatments. Make sure to closely follow the instructions for proper dosage and time intervals recommended by your vet in order to achieve maximum recovery results for your cat.
Wash all of the cat's bedding, blankets and plush toys, as well as your own. As a precautionary measure, you must make sure to thoroughly cleanse all items that your afflicted pet has come in contact with. Use a heavy-duty laundry detergent and water that is of at least 120 degrees F then dry on high heat for a minimum of 20 minutes. Non-washable items such as shoes and hats can be put in the freezer for 12 hours to effectively eliminate all traces of mites.
