Feline Chlamydia Symptoms

Feline chlamydiosis, or chlamydia, is a bacterial disease that gives cats a respiratory infection. The disease is very preventable through vaccination and by regularly cleaning and disinfecting a cat's environment. Cats with feline chlamydia can be successfully treated through medications and veterinary treatment. Without proper treatment the disease has the potential to become chronic or deadly. If your cat exhibits symptoms of feline chlamydia, seek veterinary treatment as soon as possible.
  1. Eye Discharge

    • Conjunctivitis is the swelling of the conjunctiva of the eye, the membrane lining the eyelid and the white part surrounding the eye. When this swells, the eye produces excessive discharge. The eye may become red. This discharge is very watery, but as the infection progresses, the discharge may become thick. The eye infection may begin in one eye, then spread to both.

    Fever

    • Your cat's body begins to fight infection as soon as the infection sets in. As your cat's body fights, a fever may develop. Fever is a sign of many feline medical problems, but when coupled with one or more of the symptoms described in this article, could be a sign of feline chlamydia.

    Nasal Problems

    • If your cat is suffering from feline chlamydia, you may notice an excessive watery discharge coming from the cat's nose. The discharge may or may not be accompanied by excessive sneezing. Again, this is a common symptom of many respiratory diseases, but in combination with any other symptoms described in this article may indicate feline chlamydia.

    Lethargy

    • Feline chlamydia makes your cat feel tired as its body works to fight the infection and heal. As a result, your cat may be lethargic and spend much of his time resting.

    Appetite Change

    • Reduced appetite in your cat, when present with other symptoms listed in this article, could indicate feline chlamydia in your cat. Your cat may show little interest in meals or may consume much less food than usual. Your cat may even refuse to eat at all.

    Breathing Difficulty

    • Since feline chlamydia is a respiratory infection, you may notice signs of breathing difficulty. Look for coughing or wheezing sounds when your cat breathes. If the cat shows signs of labored breathing, seek veterinary treatment immediately.
