How to Get Rid of Roundworms in a Cat

Roundworms can infect a cat in three different ways. Kittens can get roundworms by nursing a mother cat who had roundworms during her pregnancy. The eggs travel through the milk to infect the mother's young. Outdoor cats may eat small animals like rodents and will ingest the roundworms in the small animal. Cats may encounter roundworm eggs when they scratch the soil to clean their feet after using the bathroom. It is best to keep cats on a wormer regimen to prevent future infestations.

Instructions

  1. Monthly Spot-On Treatment

    • 1

Put the cat on a table and hold him still. The treatment is easier to apply if he is standing or sitting but not lying down. Some cats require a second person to help hold them in one of these positions.

    • 2

Open the Spot-on treatment and snip the top off the bottle with scissors. Apply the treatment on his shoulders and in a stripe down his back to his tail.

    • 3

Repeat the Spot-on treatment once a month to control roundworm infestations. Some brands require placement of the medicine on the shoulders only. Read the package instructions.

    Cat Wormer Tablets

    • 4

Weigh the cat so that you know its exact weight. Stand on a bathroom scale and weigh yourself then weigh yourself holding him. His weight is the difference between the two weights.

    • 5

Give the cat a tablet or tablets according to the weight and dosage instructions on the wormer tablets bottle. To cut tablets, set them on a flat surface and cut with a sharp knife.

    • 6

Give a cat a tablet as a treat for her to eat. Some cats like the taste and will eat it out of your hand. If she does not like the taste, hide the tablet in something she likes such as a piece of cheese, a small piece of lunch meat or tuna. Repeat the procedure every month.

    Cat Worming Powders

    • 7

Use a cat worming powder according to package recommendations for the proper amount and weight of cats. Weigh your cat to determine which amount is right for her.

    • 8

Sprinkle the correct amount of wormer on her cat food. Mix the powder into wet or moist food so it is harder to detect.

    • 9

Sprinkle the wormer on hard cat food and add some liquid to it to mix into the food. Tuna fish juice will disguise the taste of the wormer. Repeat dosages as recommended on the package.
