Clindamycin Side Effects in Felines

Clindamycin is an antibiotic prescribed to felines that suppresses protein growth and synthesis to inhibit bacteria. It has a narrow range of use and is often prescribed to cats to treat bacterial infections affecting the oral cavity, respiratory tract, skin and bone. This antibiotic can only be obtained with a veterinarian's prescription. This medication is considered effective and generally safe, but side effects can occur in some animals.
  1. Diarrhea

    • Felines taking Clindamycin may experience diarrhea. If a feline does have diarrhea, it is important to examine their fecal matter to make sure there is no blood in it and to make sure it isn't too watery, says Vet Info.

    Gallbladder

    • Autoimmune inflammation affecting the gallbladder is a side effect of Clindamycin. If this side effect becomes extreme, the gallbladder can become extremely swollen. When this extreme swelling occurs, the gallbladder cannot function properly and it can cause the surrounding organs to not function properly either, says Vet Info.

    Other Side Effects

    • Some cats who are taking this antibiotic will experience vomiting. A decreased appetite can also occur, according to Pet Place.
