How to Induce Feline Vomiting

A time may come in a cat owner's life when first aid tecniques may need to be implemented to save the life of a feline friend. The induction of vomiting is performed when cats ingest potentially harmful substances that may prove toxic once absorbed in the intestinal tract. Because not all substances are safe to be brought up, it is fundamental to always consult with a veterinarian or a poison control center before inducing vomiting in a cat.

  1. How to Induce Vomiting in Cats

    • 1
Always keep hydrogen peroxide in your cat's first aid kit.

Weigh your cat in order to determine the correct dosage. You will need one teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide per 10 pounds of body weight, according to Veterinarian Dawn Ruben.

    • 2
An oral syringe comes handy for this task.

Fill the oral syringe with the correct amount of hydrogen peroxide. Keep in mind that one teaspoon equals 5 cc or 5 ml.

    • 3
Wrap your cat in blanket ''burrito style'.'

Wrap the cat in the blanket for your safety, leaving only the head out. Administer the hydrogen peroxide by placing the oral syringe between the cat's cheek and teeth, being careful not to squirt it down the cat's throat. Rub the cat's throat or blow gently towards the cat's nostrils to encourage the cat to swallow.

Keep an eye on your cat for 15 to 20 minutes.

Watch your cat carefully for 15 to 20 minutes. If the cat vomits, clean up quickly and report to your veterinarian. If the cat does not vomit within this time frame, another dosage of hydrogen peroxide can be administered.

A vet's intervention may be required after the second attempt.

Call your veterinarian if your cat still does not vomit after this second attempt. You may need to take your cat to the vet at this point for stronger emetics or gastric lavage.
