Types
-
There are several different types of wormers that have a natural or homeopathic focus. Herbal wormers are natural wormers that contain a mix of herbs that work to either expel the parasites or to kill them. Some herbal wormers also contain a laxative which is designed to encourage parasite elimination. Homeopathic wormers, on the other hand, are designed to treat the entire system rather than just the parasite. Other natural wormers contain a mix of herbal, homeopathic and other natural elements.
Herbal Wormers
-
There are a variety of natural herbal wormers that you can create at home or purchase commercially. Pumpkin seed, wormwood and black walnut are all herbal remedies that you can utilize to treat worms. You will need to add these herbal remedies to your pet's food in very small amounts over several weeks to a month to eradicate the worm issue. Because different kinds of worms respond to different treatments, it is important to choose a herbal wormer that will eliminate the type of worm that your pet is suffering from.
Homeopathic Wormers
-
Homeopathic wormers work differently than herbal wormers. They boost the immune system and address the pet's predisposition for parasite infestation. Homeopathic wormers contain homeopathic compounds such as teucrium marum, filix mas, naphthalinum, artemisia abrotanum and china rubra. These remedies are typically liquid medicines that are sprayed into the mouth of the pet on a daily basis over a period of time. For larger pets, you can mix the remedy into the drinking water. You may also administer homeopathic wormer products to a pet that is already receiving an herbal wormer product.
Other Natural Wormers
-
While a homeopathic wormer will contain only homeopathic compounds, and an herbal wormer will contain only herbs, some natural wormers contain a combination of many different natural ingredients. Natural wormers may contain minerals, herbs, vitamins, nuts, seeds and other homeopathic compounds. The term "natural wormer" may also apply to just a single ingredient, such as pumpkin seeds or raw garlic, which you can use alone or in conjunction with other natural ingredients to treat the worms.
Considerations
-
Each of the natural wormer remedies mentioned is effective at treating worms, but not every remedy will work for every type of infestation. It is important to properly diagnose the infestation so that the correct natural wormer can be used. You should also use only one type of wormer at a time, as mixing different herbs and remedies can create consequences that you did not intend.
Warning
-
Plant extracts are capable of causing side effects just like any other type of medication. It is vital that you consult a veterinarian when treating a worm infestation for several reasons. First, you want to make sure that you are treating the right type of worm infestation. Second, you should solicit advice to find out which natural wormer is the best option for your pet's needs, or if it would be safer to use a different method of treating the problem.
