Cat Flatulence

Just like humans, cats also experience the discomfort of flatulence. However, there are things that can be done to decrease the amount of flatulence they produce.
  1. Symptoms

    • Symptoms of flatulence are abdominal discomfort or cramping, passing of gas , rumbling noises from the cat's stomach area and occasional vomiting or diarrhea.

    Causes

    • Flatulence may occur if your cat eats too quickly. Other causes include high fiber diets, spoiled foods, food allergies, inflammatory bowel disease, cancer, infections or constipation.

    Diagnosis

    • Your veterinarian will perform a physical examination and take a medical history to determine the cause of your cat's flatulence. Additional testing may be done including blood count, x-rays and fecal examination.

    Treatment

    • Treatment may involve switching your cat to a low-fiber, easily digestible diet as well as feeding smaller, more frequent meals.

    Long-Term Care

    • Deny your cat access to old or spoiled foods by keeping him indoors and out of the trash. Also, stick to the diet recommended by your veterinarian to ensure that your cat does not ingest any foods that may trigger a new bout of flatulence.
