How to Treat Feline Gum Disease With Water Additives

Water additives are liquid solutions that are added to the pet's drinking water to help remove plaque from the surface of the cat's teeth. The build up of plaque can contribute to gum disease in cats, just as it does in humans. Although more severe cases of gum disease may require additional treatment by a veterinarian, water additives are often effective when the gum disease is caught in the early stages.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a pitcher with one liter of cold water. Tap water is fine to use, as is distilled water or drinking water that is purchased at the supermarket.

    • 2

Pour 10ml of water additive into the pitcher of water and stir the solution thoroughly with a long-handled spoon until combined. Check the manufacturer's instructions on the water additive prior to inserting it, since the dosage amounts vary based on the manufacturer.

    • 3

Fill the cat's drinking bowl with the water solution until it is approximately 3/4 of the way full.

    • 4

Refill the cat's bowl throughout the day as the water level gets low. Ideally, the cat should be drinking most of the prepared water solution throughout the course of one day.
