Baytril Uses for Cats

Baytril is a common broad-spectrum antibiotic that contains the active ingredient enrofloxacin. Bayer manufactures Baytril, and the antibiotic is available in numerous forms, including flavored tablets, regular tablets and an injectable solution. Baytril can only be acquired through a veterinarian.
  1. How Baytril Works

    • As noted on Bayer's website, Baytril is classed as a fluoroquinolone antibiotic. Fluoroquinolones are known to work by interfering with bacterial DNA metabolism, hence killing the bacteria.

    Urinary Tract Infections

    • A common use for Baytril is the treatment of urinary tract infections (UTI) in cats. Symptoms of a UTI are straining while urinating, urinating outside the litter box and blood in the urine.

    Skin Infections

    • The underlying cause of skin infections can be somewhat difficult to diagnose, and they can become a reoccurring problem in cats if they are not addressed properly. Bayer notes that Baytril has around a 90 percent success rate in treating skin infections.

    Cat Wounds

    • Baytril can be used to treat wounds and abscesses, which have the potential to become infected.
