Arthritis
-
Like every other mammal, cats are increasingly susceptible to arthritis as they age. MSM may have beneficial effects for cats suffering from arthritis, or degenerative joint disease. MSM has anti-inflammatory properties that relieve arthritic symptoms. Cats are started on a loading dose, usually 500 mg for the first two weeks, followed by a daily maintenance dose of 250 mg. Because of the sensitive nature of their systems, cats cannot be given non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs), often used to treat arthritis in humans. Giving an NSAID to a cat can prove fatal. However, MSM is safe and effective for felines and is a good choice for managing arthritis in the aging cat.
Skin conditions
-
MSM appears to help animals, including cats, with skin conditions. It encourages wound healing and lessens scarring. Cats suffering from pruritus, evidenced by red, swollen skin, have found relief when given MSM. It has also been effective with skin problems resulting from allergies. Skin conditions are treated either orally or with topical MSM. If MSM is given topically, make sure the cat cannot lick it off the skin. Although ingesting topical MSM is unlikely to harm the cat, it negates the healing effect and should be avoided.
Dosage
-
Give one 250 mg tablet of MSM per 10 pounds of body weight per day per cat. For most cat owners, breaking open a capsule and mixing it with food is easier than giving a tablet, but if the cat will swallow a pill easily, that is an alternative. Although pet stores sell MSM tablets and capsules specifically for cats, buying MSM designated for human consumption and apportioning the dosage is generally a cheaper alternative. A liquid form of MSM is also available. Whether for feline, canine, equine or human, MSM is an inexpensive supplement. Although overdosing is unlikely, call your veterinarian for advice if it occurs.

The Effects of MSM Supplements in Cats
Methyl Sulfonyl Methane, or MSM, is used by humans and their pets to alleviate the symptoms of arthritis and other conditions. Unlike many other supplements, MSM is safe for cats. Known as biological sulfur, MSM occurs naturally in the body and helps keep skin, fur and connective tissue healthy. MSM sold for commercial use derives from the solvent dimethyl sulfoxide, or DMSO. It has been used by holistic vets for years to treat cats and is now becoming more accepted in the traditional veterinary community. For best results, purchase MSM that is at least 99 percent pure.
