Allergy Medications for Cats

Cats, just like humans, suffer from the symptoms of allergies. They may experience running noses, coughing, sneezing, swollen paws and itchy skin. In severe reactions cats also experience fur loss and diarrhea. There are treatments and medications that will help cats with allergies. These reduce the onset of symptoms and relieve problems associated with their allergic reactions.
  1. Airborne Allergies

    • For cats that suffer from airborne allergies there are several treatments. Antihistamines, which are also used in humans, may be given to the cat. This will prevent the symptoms from occurring, but they are mainly to be used before the allergies take effect. Benadryl is one example of a cat allergy medication in this category. Another option is a steroid or cortisone which will help treat symptoms and controls the allergy. This medication should be administered during pollen season. An allergy shot is possibly the most effective solution. This is administered regularly during peak allergy seasons and it controls the allergy itself, instead of just treating the symptoms.

    Skin Allergies

    • For skin problems a fatty acid is used as a medication and supplement. This helps relieve the itching and dryness caused by an allergic skin reaction. Medicated allergy shampoo is another solution. This is worked into the cat's fur. It contains an antibiotic that prevents infections from forming in raw, itchy skin. It is especially useful with cats that frequently scratch themselves to relieve their itches. Sprays that contain moisturizers such as aloe are also used to relieve skin problems.

    Flea Allergies

    • Cats with flea allergies are treated with a special flea medication. This kills the fleas and prevents further interactions with the allergy. Then a medication to soothe the flea bites and prevent scratches is applied. These medications have antibiotics in them, reducing the risk of infection while healing the scratches. Antifungal drugs are also used to prevent fungus infections from growing in the cat's skin. Finally, steroids may be used to help your cat relax and become more comfortable. This also prevents itching and further breaking of your cat's skin.
