Flagyl, is a brand name prescription, known also as the drug metronidazole. It's designed to treat diarrhea in cats and dogs. Although it is not FDA-approved for veterinary use, veterinarians can prescribe it for cats with bowel disease, Giardia or other, unclear causes of diarrhea. Flagyl can be a very effective antibiotic as it can also penetrate bone and is an anti-inflammatory.

      Bring your cat to the veterinarian and allow him to rule out other infections or causes of the diarrhea.

      Weigh the cat to determine proper dosage. The minimum dosage is 5 mg per pound but for serious cases can be as high as 23 mg per pound. Flagyl is only available with a veterinarian prescription.

      Ask the vet how often to give the determined dosage. Flagyl is given one to four times a day depending on the severity of the cat's problem.
