Erythromycin Ophthalmic Ointment for Kittens

Erythromycin ophthalmic ointment, available with or without a prescription, is an eye medication used to treat bacterial infections of the eye. It is available for cats of all age ranges as well as dogs.
  1. Effectiveness

    • Erythromycin ophthalmic ointment prohibits the growth of, or kills bacteria with the antibiotic erythromycin.

    Use

    • Carefully hold your kitten's head still and apply the ointment to the affected eye along the lower lid starting with the inside corner. Let the kitten blink, and gently massage the lid to spread the ointment to the entire eye area.

    Considerations

    • Be careful not to touch your kitten's eye with the applicator tip of the tube. Keep your fingers away from the tip, so as to not contaminate the medication.

    Results

    • You should see an improvement to the affected eye within a few days. It is important to continue to administer the medication for as long as your vet has prescribed to fully kill the infection.

    Warning

    • If you see no improvement to the eye or if the infection worsens, contact your veterinarian for additional assistance.
