How to Apply Eye Ointment to a Cat

Cats can get many of the same eye problems that people get including eye infections. But unlike us, your cat doesn't know what antibiotic ointment is or why you're trying to get the gunk into her eyes. Unless your cat is a rare kitty, she will fight you when you try to administer the ointment. Try these tips for help.

Instructions

    • 1

Talk to your cat and pet her for a few minutes to make sure she's calm. If this isn't the first time for the ointment, she's likely to be wary of you.

    • 2

Gently wrap her in a bath towel, taking care to make sure the front paws are wrapped well and her head is exposed. If gentle doesn't work, throw the towel over her and wrestle her into position.

    • 3

Wrap the towel around her head so you can grasp the towel and hold her head still. You may need to use your forearms a little to free up a hand to open the ointment tube.

    • 4

Hold the tube over one eye, use the other hand to pry open her eye and squeeze ointment onto her eyeball. It's important to get it on the eyeball and not just the eyelid because she will try to wipe it off as soon as you release her.

Repeat the previous step with the other eye. When done, let her go and watch her run!
