Feline Dementia and Incontinence

At age nine, a cat is considered to be geriatric. Older cats face health risks including the chance of developing feline dementia, which can cause associated health problems like incontinence.
  1. Feline Dementia

    • According to Washington State University, feline dementia occurs in older cats. It causes symptoms including restlessness, confusion and issues with bladder control.

    Incontinence

    • Feline dementia can cause a cat to forget where its litter box is, so it soils in the house. The disease can also cause a cat to be unaware that it is urinating so it leaks urine.

    Causes

    • Feline dementia can be caused by the build-up of gritty plaque in a cat's brain, similar to what happens in the brain of a human with Alzheimer's disease, says the BBC News.

    Treatment

    • Medications are available that can help with the symptoms of feline dementia.

    Considerations

    • You can lower a cat's risk of developing feline dementia and the incontinence that it can bring by giving it a healthy diet, exercise and mental stimulation.
