Instructions
Find out your cat's date of birth before you bring him home. Make a note on your calendar 5 1/2 to 6 months after the birth date.
Monitor your cat for signs of maturity. Signs include urine spraying and possible aggression toward you or other family members.
Make an appointment with your veterinarian when your kitten is about 5 months old to make sure your cat has all of his vaccinations. Your vet won't neuter your kitten if his vaccinations aren't up to date.
Have your kitten neutered at about 6 months of age. Some kittens may not begin to show signs of maturity until they're 8 months old, but neutering at 6 months will not harm his growth or development. Some veterinarians even recommend neutering at 4 months. Talk to your vet if you think there may be a reason for neutering your kitten that early.
How Do I Know When it Is Time to Neuter a Kitten?
Neutering your male kitten is a big decision. Not only will it curb his urge to spray and mark his territory, but it will also keep him from impregnating the female cats he's exposed to. Deciding the best time to have your kitten neutered is essential to stopping him from spraying before he even starts. If you wait too long, he will continue spraying even after you've had him fixed because it will become a habit. The procedure will also curb your cat's urge to wander, and may prevent the spread of feline diseases like feline leukemia.
