Common Nose Problems

Cats are susceptible to various conditions of the nose which can cause wheezing, sneezing, nasal discharge and even growths on the top of and around the nose. Nasal issues can be caused by viruses, smaller-than-normal nasal passages or diseases such as cancer.

  1. Restricted Nasal Passages (Short Muzzle Cats)

    • Cats with shorter muzzles, such as Persians, are prone to restricted nasal passages. This may result in breathing problems such as wheezing, panting, labored breaths and other respiratory issues.

    Nasal Discharge and Swelling

    • Communicable respiratory infections, which are typically found in younger cats, can cause the animal's nose to become runny with near-constant nasal discharge and swelling over the bridge of the nose. Cats may also exhibit excessive sneezing. Typical viruses that can cause these issues include contagious feline rhinotracheitis virus (FVR) and feline calici virus (FCV).

    Growths on the Nose

    • Cats may suffer from growths on their nose. These are sometimes marked by sunburn. Growths can be a sign of skin cancer on the nose known as squamous cell carcinoma. Growths can also be a form of bacteria or virus and should be checked out immediately by a veterinarian.

    Injury

    • If a cat paws at its nose on a constant basis the problem typically stems from an injury. Bleeding, swelling and redness may also signal an injury. Male cats are especially prone to nose injuries.
