Causes of Feline Cystitis
-
Several possible causes for the development of feline cystitis exist. According to the Winn Feline Foundation, these causes include bladder stones, bacterial infections, crystals in the urine, a bladder tumor, anatomical defects, behavioral problems and inflammation of the urethra. Feline cystitis may also develop without any identifiable cause, which is known as idiopathic cystitis.
Symptoms
-
According to Cat World, symptoms include problems with urination such as straining to urinate or increased frequency, as well as crying in the litter box or failing to use it. Cat World further notes that blood in the urine, increased licking of the genitals and increased thirst may accompany cystitis.
Elavil as a Treatment Option
-
Elavil is an antidepressant also known as Amitriptyline. An Ohio State University study found that Elavil decreased symptoms in 60 percent of cats studied. Elavil can help reduce cats' stress level. Since stress can be a major contributing factor in feline cystitis, reducing stress can help reduce cystitis symptoms. Furthermore, as the Winn Feline Foundation notes, Elavil may decrease pain and reduce inflammation of the bladder lining.
When Is Elavil Appropriate?
-
Not all cases of cystitis require medical treatment. Your vet may have you try some things for a mild case of cystitis before trying medication, such as a change in diet and reducing stress in the cat's environment.
Side Effects
-
Elavil is well tolerated by most cats, but there are some side effects. The Ohio State University Study found weight gain, sleepiness, decreased coat quality, decreased grooming and bladder stone formation in some cats.

Elavil for Feline Cystitis
Feline cystitis, an inflammation of the lining of the bladder, is common in older cats. Treatment methods vary depending on the cause and severity, but one option is treatment with Elavil (Amitriptyline), an antidepressant.
