Cat Eyesight Problems

Cats may encounter vision problems for many different reasons. It̵7;s important to know what signs to look for as some eyesight problems may cause your cat to go blind. Signs to look for are cloudiness or discharge coming from the eye. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals notes, ̶0;Certain body language will also alert you to possible eye distress. If your cat is constantly squinting or pawing at her eye area, give her eyes a good inspection.̶1; If you suspect your cat is experiencing eyesight problems contact your veterinarian immediately as it could be many different eye-related disorders.
  1. Glaucoma

    • Glaucoma in cats occurs when the globe of the eye becomes enlarged or sunken, which causes a cat's third eyelid to stick out. This is due to increased pressure on the eyeballs. The most common symptom is an inability to see. Other symptoms may include pain or behavioral changes.

    Cataracts

    • Cataracts is a condition where the lens of the eye becomes cloudy in one or both eyes. As a result, your cat may have a hard time seeing. Cataracts may be a result of radiation or genes. Cataracts is more common in older or diabetic cats. Surgery is the only form of treatment. During surgery a cloudy lens is replaced with an artificial lens.

    Retinal Disease

    • Retinal disease results in partial or total vision loss. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, retinal disease can occur when light-sensitive cells at the back of the eye degenerate.

    Uveitis

    • Uveitis is an eye infection that occurs when the interior of the eye becomes inflamed. Symptoms include blurred vision, pain or sensitivity to light. Treatment options are available. According to The Cat Health Guide, ̶0;Treatment includes NSAIDs to eliminate any pain your cat might be in and topical treatments and steroids to help the eye.̶1;

    Prevention

    • There are ways to prevent eye and vision problems in cats. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, ̶0;The best way to prevent eye conditions is to make sure your cat gets all her vaccinations and has thorough check-ups. Please examine her eyes regularly and consult a vet if you find any abnormalities. Eye conditions that are left untreated can lead to impaired sight or even blindness.̶1;
