Feline AIDS Facts

Feline AIDS, also known as the feline immunodeficiency virus, or FIV, is caused by the same virus that causes AIDS in humans and has the same effects, however, FIV cannot be spread between cats and human.
  1. Identification

    • The feline immunodeficiency virus works by attacking the cat's immune system. Eventually the immune system becomes so weak that it can no longer fight off other viruses and infections. There is no cure for the virus, but cats can live up to 10 years carrying it.

    Symptoms

    • The feline immunodeficiency virus will attack a cat's immune system first. During this time, the virus will begin to cause infections, fever and swollen lymph nodes. Energy levels will drop as well.

    Warning

    • At some point during the infection, the cat will appear completely normal. It can remain like this for years and the cat can go on living a happy life. After this stage is over, however, the cat will begin to get very ill and overall health deteriorates quickly.

    Terminal

    • In the final year, a cat will suffer terrible infections and diseases causing them to become immobile. An owner may choose to put the cat to sleep during this time, which means a vet will give them medicine to help them die. Otherwise, it's fatal and the cat will pass within a year.

    Diagnosis

    • A feline that is infected with the feline immunodeficiency virus, will suffer a number of problems. The infections caused by the disease may lead to gum cancer, skin disorders, problems maintaining balance, dementia, neurological problems that can cause seizures and changes in personality.
