Worms are intestinal parasites that your cat or dog can pick up. The most common worms your animal will contract are roundworms and tapeworms. Roundworms are long, slimy and round. According to wormsindogs.org, tapeworms can look like uncooked rice rice or a sesame seeds. Dogs can contract worms via mosquito bites, eating uncooked meat or fish, sniffing worm eggs and from eating feces. But the only way a dog can get tapeworms, says wormsindogs.org, is by eating an infected flea. Symptoms of worms in dogs include anemia, diarrhea, white segments in feces, poor appetite, rubbing his rear on the ground and weight loss despite a good appetite. Cats can contract worms by ingesting worm-infested feces, and kittens can get worms through their infected mother. Symptoms of worms in cats include excessive licking of the anus, vomiting, listlessness, diarrhea, weight loss, dehydration, extended abdomen or worms present in the animal's feces. Outdoor cats are especially at risk. If left untreated in cats and dogs, worms can cause intestinal blockages and death. Garlic is an effective method for the treatment of worms as garlic's volatile oils and sulfur compounds are repellent to worms.
