Safety of Frontline on Pets

Controlling fleas and ticks on companion animals is important not only for the health of the animal but also for the health and safety of the household. Frontline is among the leading products for fleas and ticks and is available only through veterinarians.
  1. Description

    • Merial Limited offers three Frontline products for dogs and cats: Frontline Plus, Frontline Top Spot and Frontline Spray. Each contains the pesticide fipronil that kills fleas and ticks.

    Application

    • The Plus and Top Spot products are monthly topical applications that are applied directly on the animals between their shoulder blades. Frontline Spray is sprayed on the animals' coats for occasional use.

    Indications

    • Frontline is safe in dogs and cats ages 8 weeks and older, as well as breeding, pregnant and lactating dogs and cats, according to Merial.

    Side Effects

    • Rarely, temporary irritation at the application site, lethargy or vomiting can occur when using Frontline.

    Cautions

    • Merial cautions against getting the product in the animal's eyes, which can cause temporary irritation. Do not let the animal lick the product application site before it dries, which can cause salivation. Similarly, Merial advises not petting the animal until the product dries. Wear gloves when applying the spray.
