How to Protect a Window Sill for a Cat

Cats who like to sit in window sills can cause a number of problems both for themselves and for your window or its screen. Protecting the window sill for and from the cat involves a simple solution that will satisfy both you and your pet. Making a window sill cover may not be enough to protect your cat while she sits in the sill; a small flat pillow is the best solution for a cat that sits in a window sill. It gives your cat a comfortable place to sit or lie and can help prevent your cat from scratching the wood.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length and width of your window sill. You will make a pillow that fits inside the sill with the window open. Most windows are approximately 24 inches long and 12 to 14 inches wide.

    • 2

Use fabric that matches your interior decoration and will not look out of place in your window sill.

    • 3

Cut two pieces of fabric that are each 26 inches long and 16 inches wide. Allow 2 inches of extra fabric on each side of the fabric for a seam.

    • 4

Turn each piece of fabric over so that you are sewing the window sill pillow inside out.

    • 5

Use a needle and durable thread to sew three of the four sides together using a loop stitch. Leave about 1/4 inch between each loop to create a tightly stitched pillow.

    • 6

Turn the pillow right side out and stuff it with cotton filling. Use several handfuls of filling to get an even amount of filling in the pillow.

    • 7

Sew the final side shut and cut off the excess fabric to make a trim seam.

    • 8

Place the pillow in the window sill.
