Why an Aging Cat Is Missing the Litter Box

Physical and emotional reasons might exist that could cause a cat to miss the litter box--or even to use inappropriate areas for that purpose. Knowing and observing your cat is key to figuring out his problems.
  1. Physical Changes

    • Arthritis in aging bones might make stepping over the edge of the litter box painful to your cat. If this is the case, try getting a litter box with a lower edge. Never give your cat aspirin.

    Health Problems

    • Your cat might have a bladder or urinary tract problem that makes urinating painful. If that is the case, the cat might associate the pain with the litter box and avoid using it.

    Emotional Issues

    • Cats are slaves to their routines. If you've recently retired or made changes in your home or family, your cat could be stressed out about these strange new aspects of her environment.

    Prevention/Solution

    • If you suspect a bladder or urinary tract issue, take your cat immediately to a veterinarian. Such problems can quickly become fatal.

    Misconceptions

    • Many people think animals have no emotional problems, but this is untrue. Pet supply stores often carry herbal remedies specially designed to help soothe your cat.
