Information on Worms in Cats

You need to watch out for many different diseases and other ailments in cats. Worm infestations are a fairly common problem that can be very detrimental to cats but is also curable.
  1. Process

    • Worm infestations occur when one or more types of worm invade a cat's stomach lining or intestinal wall. Worms consume portions of a cat's diet and reduce the cat's nutritional intake.

    Likelihood

    • While any cat can be susceptible to a worm infestation, outdoor cats and cats that have fleas are more likely to be afflicted. Newborn kittens can also potentially be infected by their mother.

    Risks

    • Cats can die from worm infestations, although this rarely occurs. Kittens are more vulnerable and more likely to be affected quickly by worms, and all cats can become malnourished by worm infestations.

    Treatment

    • You can treat cats with worms by giving them de-wormer medication over a several week period. If the medication is in pill form, it may be best to have a veterinarian assist in administering it, as cats often refuse pills.

    Prevention

    • To help avoid worm infestations, keep a cat's litter box as clean as possible. Regular flea treatment helps lower the chances of a worm infestation.
