See the Vet
-
Your cat should see a veterinarian immediately upon the discovery of blood in the urine. There could be a number of causes but many feline urinary tract disorders can quickly lead to blockages and, if that happens, your cat could die within 24 hours due to kidney failure. The vet will take a number of tests to determine the cause of the blood and may prescribe medicine, a specialized diet, or recommend a specific treatment such as surgery. The sooner the cat sees the vet, the better its chances of full recovery are.
Specialized Diet
-
If the vet determines that stones are causing the urinary tract infection, he may prescribe a special diet for your cat to help dissolve the stones. There are a number of foods on the market that are specifically designed for this but they are only available by prescription because they create acid-based conditions within the cat's body that can dissolve the stones but need to be supervised by a vet. Soft food is preferable to dry for this purpose because the cat needs as much moisture intake as possible to maintain a healthy urinary tract.
Antibiotics
-
Antibiotics may be prescribed as well to treat any infections that could be causing the blood in your cat's urine. Bacterial infections are rare in feline cases of blood in the urine but many antibiotics also have anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties that assist in the treatment of your cat and keep him more comfortable.
Cranberry capsules are also good for the bladder and are safe to give to your cat long-term. They can be purchased from most health food stores.
