Natural Wormers Defined
-
"Herbal wormers" and "homeopathic wormers" are two terms that are sometimes used synonymously with "natural wormers," but there are some important differences. Herbal wormers, while natural, contain only herbs that act directly on the parasites to kill or expel them. Some herbal wormers also include an herbal laxative to encourage elimination of the parasites. Homeopathic wormers are not intended to directly treat the parasites, but to treat the cat's entire system in an effort to bring the cat's health back into balance. Herbal and homeopathic wormers are technically natural and they can be effective, especially when used together.
Natural wormers differ from herbal and homeopathic wormers in that they may contain a combination of herbs, minerals, vitamins, seeds, nuts and homeopathic compounds. The term natural wormer may also refer to a single ingredient, such as a clove of raw garlic. Natural worming compounds also differ from pharmaceutical wormers because they contain all natural ingredients such as pumpkin seeds, mint leaf, clove, betel nut, garlic and wormwood. It is important to remember that, just as with humans, plant extracts are drugs which can cause unwanted side effects. While natural wormers can be effective, they should be administered with professional guidance. If your cat has a life-threatening infestation, your veterinarian may discourage the use of a natural wormer due to their slower results.
Symptoms and Prevention of Parasitic Worms
-
Diarrhea, vomiting worms or worm pieces or eliminating worms in the feces are signs that your cat may have a serious worm infestation. If you suspect your cat may have parasitic worms, seek treatment immediately. In some cases, worm eggs can live outside the cat's body resulting in infestations of carpet and bedding where the cat lays.
Parasitic worms are usually found and treated in kittens who contract the worms from an infected mother. However, it is possible for adult cats to contract worms. Clean feces from litter boxes and yards regularly. Do not allow cat's to eat wild prey. Feed your cats a high-quality food that includes natural pro-biotics to keep the digestive system strong and healthy. Occasional snacks of pumpkin seeds and raw garlic clove are said to keep the digestive tract free of parasites.
